Urban Meyer’s career began in 1985 when Meyer spent one season interning as a defensive back coach at Saint Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He worked under the mentorship of legendary St. Xavier head coach Steve Rasso. He also met members of the Ohio State coaching staff there.

His first coaching experience was as a graduate assistant coaching at Ohio State. He worked under head coach Earle Bruce. He then spent the next thirteen years as an assistant coach.

He coached many talented players during his coaching career. He worked with players like ER Greg Primus in Colorado State, WR Bobby Brown and WR David Givens in Notre Dame, the latter being drafted by the New England Patriots in 2000.

In 2001, Meyer took his first head coaching job at Bowling Green. He really impressed everyone in his debut season as he led one of the greatest turnarounds in NCAA football history by going 8–3 and capping off the season with a 56–21 victory over Bowling Green’s rival team the University of Toledo Rockets.

He also capped Mid-American Conference coach of the year honors. The next year, Bowling Green finished with a 9–3 record and 17–6 overall record. After spending two seasons at Bowling Green he joined Utah in 2003.

In his first season as the coach of Utah he was awarded Mountain West Conference’s coach of the year award with 10-2 points, a record no coach at Utah had gotten before in his first season. He also won the Sporting News National coach of the year award, the first Utah coach to do so.

His success made both University of Florida and University of Notre Dame want him as their coach but he joined as the head coach of University of Florida for the 2005 season. He soon became one of the highest paid coaches of that time due to his success.

In 2009 he had to take a leave of absence from coaching due to sickness but returned to coaching the following year. After he resigned from the post of head coach of the Florida Gators football team Meyers worked as a college football commentator and analyst for the American television sports network ESPN.

In 2011 he joined Ohio State Buckeyes and in 2015 signed a contract extension with the team through 2020.
