Phil Anselmo grew up in New Orleans. He lived in French Quarters with his mom and aunt. He does not talk much about his past because he had a horrible time as a child. He said both man and women has molested him as a child when he lived with his mom and aunt. He was the class clown of his school.

Superjoint Ritual

Superjoint Ritual is a New Orleans based metal band, which was put together by Phil Anselmo, Joe Fazzio and Jimmy Bower. This band was mainly into groove music and hardcore punk.

The band released three albums on Sanctuary records. They had come up with the name of Superjoint Ritual from a lyric in the Darkthrone song “The Pegan Winter”.

Housecore Records

Housecore Records is Phil Anselmo’s own recording label, which started in 2001. Phil Anselmo’s house was more of a hangout to them so they named the label Housecore.

He used this label to release many of his side projects and unreleased tracks of his. He merged Housecore with his longtime friend Killjoy’s label named Baphomet.

After the merge, they named their label Baphomet/Housecore Records. After three releases, they got separated and Housecore Records became one again.

Now Housecore Records are releasing Anselmo’s songs and other bands that Anselmo produces.

Arson Anthem

Arson Anthem was a Southern Hardcore Punk Project that was originated after Mike Williams Moved into Phil’s spare apartment. Arson Anthem line-up consists of Phil in guitar, Mike as lead vocal, Hank III on drums and Collin Yeo on bass.

Christ Inversion

Anselmo formed Christ Inversion in 1994, which used to do black metal project but they disbanded before doing any full album. Later in 2008, Anselmo released the songs from his own label.

Southern Isolation

This band was formed with Phil’s ex-wife as lead vocal and Guitar and Phil as vocal and backing vocal and guitar.

He did many more side projects like Viking Crown, Eibon, Phillip H. Anselmo and the Illegals, Scour, En Minor etc.

Controversies and Backlashes

Back Pain and Drug abuse

Anselmo had a back injury in the 1990s, to lower the main he started drinking and used relaxants heavily. After sometime, he got addicted to heroin. Because of drug abuse his performance dropped.

In July 13, 1996 Phil went into cardiac arrest due to overdosing heroin. The paramedics were able to save him by an inch. In 2005, Anselmo stopped using drugs so that he can go through back surgery. In 2016, he stopped drinking too.

Racial Controversies

On January 22, 2016, Anselmo ended a tribute show to Dimebag Darrell by giving Nazi salute and screamingly saying “White Power”. He got a lot of backlashes from it. He said it was a joke but it seemed people took it like a serious comment. Anselmo got a lot of backlashes for it.
