D.L. Hughley was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, United States but he didn’t get much chance to spend time there. When he was only 2 months old his family moved to South Central, Los Angeles, United States.

He grew up there. But his teenage years wasn’t the best one. He got mixed up with a street gang called “The Bloods”. During this time, he also called expelled from “San Pedro High School” for this reason.

But he didn’t stay active with these activities and came out clean when he saw one of his cousins succumbed to death. He then went on to complete his GED and secure a job at “The Los Angeles Times”.

This show went on between 1998 and 2002. In 2005, he made a stand-up comedy album. It was called “D.L. Hughley: Notes from The GED Section”.

During this time, he also started a talk show based on comedy central known as “Weekends at the D.L.”. But the show didn’t run long.

His first book titled “I Want You to Shut the F#ck Up: How the Audacity of Dopes Is Ruining America” was published in 2012.

His other books “Black Man, White House: An Oral History of the Obama Years” and “How Not to Get Shot: And Other Advice from White People” were published in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

He was hired to work for CNN as a comic news writer to write on various topics ranging between politics, current happenings, entertainment, sports etc. The show was called “D.L Hughley Breaks the News”.

He also worked on Radio shows. His show “D.L. Hughley Morning Show” premiered on July 20, 2009. The show aired on 98.7 Kiss FM; a radio channel based on New Work City.

The show started a competition between him and his former “King of Comedy” mate Steve Harvey, who at that time was running his own show known as “Steve Harvey Morning Show” on Kiss FM’s rival channel.
