Background

Colin was born in Scotland as the oldest issue of three to his parents. In 1964 their family moved to a French neighborhood located just outside Montreal, Quebec.

But they didn’t stay there for long as they moved to Vancouver, British Columbia just 5 years later. He started his academic career in Killarney Secondary School with an aim to become a marine biologist.

He was a very shy person in school and called himself a loner. Although he wanted to become a marine biologist, his interest took a 360 degree turn when a friend of his asked him to act in a play called “The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch”.

He played the role of an undertaker. It was the first time he got an idea about how it feels to make the audience laugh. That was the moment when he made up his mind to mark his footsteps in the world of entertainment and make a career out of it.

Career Development

He began his career after graduating from Studio 58. He started working as a member for the Vancouver Theatresport. He started working there in 1980 but the path to success didn’t come easy to him.

At one stage he literally had to pull people from MacDonald’s to come and see the shows. He started there as a part time job but soon it turned out to be full time for him.

It is during this time when he met fellow improviser Ryan Stiles. He left the group in 1986. He then moved to Toronto where he worked alongside Ryan in Second City National Touring Company.

This is the place where he also met his wife Debra who at that time was working as a director there. He worked three years there and directed three productions for the company.

After spending some quality time with his new wife he auditioned for improv show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” But he didn’t get the part. The following year he moved to Los Angeles and again auditioned for the part.

This time he got the part and moved to London. But then again he was let go after making an appearance in one episode only. But he didn’t give up.

After giving an audition for the third time he got a regular spot in the show and worked there for 7 years before the show ended in 1998. But his journey didn’t stop there.

Next he went on to appear in the US version of the show from 1998 to 2006. He also stayed active elsewhere too apart from his role in Whose Line?

In 1994, he portrayed the role of Mike Brady in a musical version of “The Brady Bunch”. He also appeared in Canadian improvisational comedy series “Improv Heaven and Hell”.

He started in the Canadian comedy series “Blackfly” from 2001 until 2002. In 2004, he hosted a tongue-in-cheek guide to surviving animal attacks on Animal Planet known as “Wild Survival Guide”.

Next in 2006, he starred in “Getting Along Famously “, followed by hosting part of the Press Correspondents’ Dinner with the President in 2007.

The same year he hosted the Canadian version of the game show “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?”. Becoming only the fifth “Whose Line?” cast to become a game show host.

He acted in the Canadian television sitcom “She’s the Mayor” in 2011. Following year, he starred in the improv comedy series “Trust Us with Your Life”.

He returned to the remake of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” In 2013. Since 2002, he has been making regular tours with fellow Whose Line Star Brad Sherwood in North America and doing two-man stage shows.

The shows are called “An Evening with Colin and Brad”. As of 2018 both of them are continuing this but now the shows are called “Scared Scriptless Tour” and hosted in larger locations like the Sydney Opera House, and Royal Albert Hall in London etc.
